Enhanced Scanner Control (ESC)

Optional Purchase Necessary: This feature is available only if you purchased the Enhanced Scanner Control (ESC) option on a GL4 with a PC-Based Automation1-iSMC version 2.7 or newer. You must also purchase the ESC option on the AGV Scanner (HPO or XPO). The ESC option must be installed on the GL4 and the AGV Scanner at the factory. You cannot upgrade existing hardware to include this option.

Before you use the Enhanced Scanner Control (ESC) option, make sure that you know the important information that follows:

  • Enhanced Scanner Control (ESC) is a feature that Automation1 automatically applies to all types of motion. If you want to disable ESC, use the Global Technical Support Portal to contact Aerotech Global Technical Support.
  • The values for the feedforward gains and filters parameters are supplied by Aerotech. Do not adjust them for an axis that is configured with Enhanced Scanner Control (ESC). If you make changes to these parameters, they can decrease the performance of the axis very much.

WARNING: The GL4 can control a laser scan system. When you install and use this galvo drive, you must obey all of the safety precautions for a laser. You are responsible for the laser safety for all of the system.

Enhanced Scanner Control (ESC) is a hardware and software option that you can order for the GL4 two-axis laser scan-head drive. This option uses an advanced system model to decrease tracking error.

If you have an axis that has Enhanced Scanner Control (ESC) enabled and you see high-frequency oscillations during or after motion, you might be able to make the performance of the axis better. To do this, you must make sure that the Position Command and its derivatives for that axis are smooth and do not have large discontinuities. The list that follows has Automation1 concepts and features that you can use to increase the smoothness of a trajectory:

When you order an AGV Scanner (HPO or XPO) and GL4 with the Enhanced Scanner Control (ESC) option, ESC is configured and enabled at the factory by default. Thus it is not necessary for you to configure additional parameters to enable this option.

The values for the parameters that follow are supplied by Aerotech. Do not adjust them. If you make changes to these parameters, they will have a negative effect on the performance of the axis.
