Install the Software

Install the Automation1-iSMC

You can use the Automation1 Intelligent Software-Based Machine Controller (iSMC) with a Windows PC or with a drive-based controller, such as the iXC4.

If you use a PC-based controller, use Automation1-iSMCSetup.exe to install the Automation1-iSMC on any Windows 10 PC that is validated to have real-time performance. Windows 11 is not supported for Automation1-iSMC. The Automation1-iSMC installer installs the kernel-level functionality for the Automation1 motion controller. Automation1-iSMC must use the TCP/UDP port 12200 and 12205. Make sure that no other installed programs are using these ports.

If you use a drive-based controller, the Automation1-iSMC is installed at the factory. Because of this, do not use Automation1-iSMC.exe to install the Automation1-iSMC on your Windows PC. You can use the Automation1-MDK to update the Automation1-iSMC software on your drive-based controller. Refer to Automation1 Studio for more information.

Install the Automation1-MDK

Windows applications and APIs are not supplied with Automation1-iSMC. You must use Automation1-iMDKSetup.exe to install the Automation1 Machine & Motion Control Developer's Kit (MDK) for access to Windows-level applications and APIs that are necessary to use the Automation1 controller. If you are using a PC-based controller, you can install Automation1-MDK on a separate PC or you can install Automation1-MDK on the same PC as the Automation1-iSMC.

For more information about what is included with each installer, refer to Platform Architecture.

Your installation media will also contain:

  • Files that contain the License Key that you will need to activate the software. Refer to Activate the Software for more information.
  • If you purchased integration from Aerotech, the media will also contain system documentation and a Machine Controller Definition file. When you use Automation1 Studio, you must first connect to your controller and upload the Machine Controller Definition (MCD) file that is supplied on your installation media. This MCD file contains Parameters and Machine Setup data that was fully configured and tested at the factory. See Configure Workspace for more information about uploading MCD files.

Next Step: Activate the Software
